Haringey Police Community Amateur Boxing Club’s Nicola Adams is eyeing Olympic history as women’s boxing is included in the Olympic Games for the first time in London.
Adams, 29, who moved from Leeds to Tottenham four years ago to train, became the first British women to capture European gold in 2011 and has clinched three consecutive world silver medals.
"I’m doing a sport I enjoy doing, I love doing boxing, it’s great to finally have it as an Olympic sport and it shows women’s boxing has come a long way and so has Great Britain” said Adams, who lists Muhammad Ali as one of her all-time heroes.
“It’s going to be great to be part of that moment and I’m going to enjoy every second of it.
“We’ve got a really good setup in Sheffield and it shows by the type of medals we’re winning in European and World honours.”
Team Leader Rob McCracken, who himself represented Great Britain as an amateur before turning professional, said: “We’ve got lots of talent in the United Kingdom and boxing is picking up all the time.
“Seven out of our ten boxers will be highly seeded which shows the way the sport has moved on. They’re a talented bunch and they’re a nice group of youngsters and the future is really promising for them.”
