Haringey Borough stunned Essex Senior League leaders Great Wakering Rovers after a 4-2 home win on Tuesday night which extended their unbeaten run to 13 matches.

The hosts produced their best performance of the season to clinch a victory which moved them into third place in the table.

Boro should have been two goals up in the first few minutes as Anthony McDonald wasted the first real opportunity of the match before Darrell Cox drew a fine save from visiting keeper Adam Seal and blazed an easier chance over the bar. Rovers opened the scoring against the run of play after 13 minutes with their first decent attack of the game.

A free-kick saw keeper Ashley Harris fail to collect and Great Wakering captain Lewis Sparrow lobbed the ball into the empty net from the edge of the area. After that there was really only one team looking the likely winners as Haringey simply outplayed the leaders. McDonald in particular was a constant thorn in the side of the right flank of the Wakering defence.

The only surprise was that it took so long for the equaliser to arrive and the lead to be secured after so many half chances had been spurned.

Haringey drew level after 24 minutes when a 15-yard shot by McDonald took a massive deflection which completely wrong footed Seal. Spurred on by that success Borough intensified the pressure further and it was no surprise when a clumsy challenge resulted in a penalty.

Seal made a good save from Cox’s spot kick but could not hold onto the ball and he followed up to blast it into the roof of the net.

Boro dominated the second half from the outset and ten minutes after the restart were rewarded with another goal when Cox’s persistence enabled him to work a clear ten-yard opening and give Seal no chance with his finish.

In the 70th minute Ashley Fashanu virtually removed any lingering doubt as he blasted home from close range after a melee in the six-yard box.

Substitute Walid Matata looked certain to make it five when he burst clear and closed in from the left only to blast his close-range finish into the side netting. Great Wakering scored a second goal in the 88th minute through David Collins but Haringey ran out comfortable winners.

Boro host Clapton this weekend as they look to extend their excellent run of form.
